Re-standardisation of Total Protein Assay

The supplier of our Total Protein test has modified their calibrator to ensure traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The net effect on our Total protein results is an increase of 4% which is within clinically acceptable limits as determined by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Pathlab will be amending our Total Protein and Globulin reference intervals and the associated trigger values for recommending repeat testing and for protein electrophoresis.

A comment will be appended to all Total Protein reports for a period of 3 months, as follows:

“TP results have increased by 4% following re-standardisation of the assay. The reference interval has been adjusted accordingly. The assay is otherwise unchanged.”
