HPV Swabbing

The transition from the buffer containing HPV swab tube to the dry tube has gone well, but there are couple of important points to note about breaking the swab into the tube.

You MUST break the swab at the indicated pink break line on the swab shaft as indicated in the photograph.

HPV Break Point

Please do NOT cut off the swab above this break point for two reasons:

  • The swab will become stuck in the tube lid (as seen in the screen shot taken from a video) and then get dropped within the instrument rendering the swab unsuitable for analysis and risking instrument contamination.
  • Cutting the swab risks contaminating the patients specimen with DNA from the scissors.

When breaking the swab try to ensure the swab tip does not become bent, as the instrument pipette can accidently pull the swab out of the tube when sampling fluid for the HPV test. This will also render the swab unsuitable for analysis and risk instrument contamination.
